Use of Information Technology in Indian Judicial System to Facilitate Access to Justice: Challenges and Prospects
(National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam, 2025-06) Chakraborty, Hero
Access to justice is an important aspect of democratic government. In India, even with constitutional guarantees and judicial activism, a large segment of the population still does not enjoy at least timely and affordable access to justice. This dissertation considers the changing role of IT in transforming the Indian court system in connection with improving access to justice. It assesses various initiatives by the judiciary and government - the e-Courts Mission Mode Project, online case management systems, electronic filing, videoconferencing, and AI-based tools like SUVAS, and considers whether such initiatives would address enduring access problems such as, case backlog, delay, and complexity.
